If you're keen on not being run down - always (whenever possible) run facing the traffic. If you run when it is dark or poor visibility wear light clothing, wear a reflective strip and possibly wear a flashing light. Be careful of cars approaching from behind (when you are running on the same side as the traffic). When you're tired you tend to use your hearing rather than having to turn around. This means listening to music makes you less aware. However, if you hear a car approaching from behind, and move further off the road, be careful once it has passed of moving back to your former position, without looking, as often there is another car directly behind the first who is not expecting you to move suddenly back towards the road. Being squashed should not be part of your training plan - rather be careful, especially when you get tired.

Last Thursday I ran about 4K's up and down the little hills here in Durban. Today I managed to slug-run about 6K's. Dang I'm fat. But more fat today than tommorrow, and less fat today than yesterday! The hardest part is getting started, but now I'm beginning....Cam

Well done Cam - as you know it's always hardest to get going. The first few weeks are the real tough ones - but keep at it and keep enjoying it and soon you will be so thin we wont see you if you stand sideways... C:-)

Hey there Craig Its winter here in Melb and i often run at night, but i do prefer the asphalt to the evil concrete footpath ... so i have taken to wearing my reflective bike vest while running. It seems i shine like a beacon for the oncoming cars because they all raise their headlights long before they get to me. I keep a safe distance from the actual traffic, always running on the shoulder of the road, but now that the distances are increasing i have no choice but to run on the road as the footpath ends and i head into country Victoria ... last night i ran to the boundary of my municipality which is a novel thought. I also get an ambiguous little toot of the car horn every so often, but it seems more of a friendly encouraging toot rather than a "what the hell are you doing!" blast. Cheers Nath

Yeah - that's the fun thing with the long runs, you need to start venturing out further and further. We find that we run the entire perimeter of our suburb and surrounding suburbs in order to get a 21km in. Like today we're off to do 21km so we have to really search for the mileage. Our other option is we get someone to drop us off the required distance from home - I enjoy that because there is a real sense of achievement in a point-to-point run as compared to running and returning to the same point. I know the feeling of the night runs - but I too enjoy them. Great to see that you wear stuff to keep you visible as that is the biggest risk. We tend to head out at about 4pm but now in winter it gets dark at about 5:30pm so all our longer runs (over 2 hours) end in the dark - it's fun. It is nice to see people encouraging you on - I guess most often they are other runners. I see people out running sometimes and feel envious as it looks so much fun......enjoy it....this is what makes you feel alive! c:-)
